Celebrating St George

SCOUTS from the Adur Valley district marked the centenary of Scouting at the annual St George's Day parade and service at Lancing College Chapel.

Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, and Adur District Council vice chairman Brenda Collard inspected the Scouts from Shoreham, Southwick, Steyning, Upper Beeding and Bramber, Lancing and Sompting.

The Scouts, ranging in age from six to 25, then paraded with the union and St George's flags as well as their own unit flags, followed by a service in the chapel.

Joy Carter, Adur Valley Scouts chairman, said: "This is a particularly special year as 2007 is the centenary of Scouting.

"Robert Baden-Powell, our founder, had the first Scout camp on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour in August, 1907.

"That small experiment has grown into the world's greatest youth movement."
