Wally's hot form means managers have met their match

Cowdray Park seniors' match managers held a meeting to discuss arrangements to be made for the 27 forthcoming matches this season.

Before the meeting and lunch, they played an informal but competitive stableford under extreme conditions, with gale-force winds and intermittent showers.

Man of the moment Wally Mitchell, last year’s seniors’ captain, made light of the conditions and recorded an excellent score of 37 points, just pipping Allen Sibley (36) to first prize, presented by the new seniors’ captain Peter Burton.

n The weather continues to take its toll on the Cowdray Park seniors’ competitions, with the third round of the Captain’s Prize the latest victim.

It has been possible to re-schedule this for Thursday, March 10, to ensure a full complement of rounds.

The seniors’ knockout winter singles and foursomes have been progressing during the periodic lulls in the weather.

The quarter-finalists in the singles so far are Frank Cheevers, Gordon Kendall, Keith Chapman and Phil Harrison, while seven of the eight foursomes’ quarter-final places have been decided.

n The Winter Foursomes at Cowdray Park attracted 24 pairings, who started with a knockout competition. The final was between the father and son pairing of Sam and Mark Howes and Phil Harrison and Richard Whitcomb.

With the latter pairing having to give nine shots, this was, on paper, going to be a tough match, but Phil and Richard played some great golf, and ended up winning 6&5.

The club’s February medal involved 89 players. Division one was won by Rod Brown (nett 70), while division two went to Roger Howard (68). Overall winner was division-three victor Archie Challen (65).
