Sidley finally see the light

SIDLEY United are hoping to get on with the football after the saga of their floodlights was finally resolved this week.

The lux test on the lights, which had been due since before the turn of the year, was at last carried out on Tuesday.

United have had to cancel four matches since January 2, including Tuesday night's scheduled visit from Eastbourne United Association, because their lux certificate had not been renewed.

Joint manager Andy Laskey said: "We had them on at training on Tuesday night and you can see the difference. Every part of the pitch is lit up well."

The quartet of postponements and successive cup ties over the past two weekends have seen Sidley slide to fourth-from-bottom of the Sussex Division One table.

But having played only one league encounter in 2007 and just 17 of their 38 in total, they do have games in hand on everyone bar Hailsham Town.

United intend to eat into their fixture pile-up over the coming days with contests on Saturday February 10 and Tuesday.

First up is a visit from 11th-placed Three Bridges and that will be followed by a trip to a ninth-placed Hailsham side which has already beaten them three times this season.

Josh Brown will be fit, Steve Morris and Jordan Wood are rated 60-40, and Mark Funnell is 50-50, but Jimmy Watson is out and Graham Morris is unavailable.

Lewis Parsons is likely to be added to the squad, while Paul Henty and Lee Wood are set to return in the reserves.

A massive task will confront Bexhill United tomorrow when they entertain the runaway leaders of Sussex Division Three.

United will take on a Rustington team which attracted national media coverage for winning all of their games in 2006.

The West Sussex outfit have continued that form over the past few weeks by triumphing in their first three matches of 2007.

Second-bottom Bexhill have lost five of their six league fixtures at The Polegrove this season, including Saturday's last gasp 2-1 reverse against Ifield Edwards.

After their cup success of last weekend, it's high time for Little Common to start getting stuck into their league programme.

The Commoners reached the semi-finals of the Sussex Intermediate Cup on Saturday, but still have 15 Division Three games remaining.

The first of these will be a testing visit from fourth-placed Newhaven tomorrow when eighth-placed Common, who welcome back Chas Lister, will seek a fifth straight victory. All of tomorrow's matches kick-off at 3pm.
