Under-11s flying the rugby flag for Chichester

CHICHESTER under-11s were again able to field two sides who are difficult to separate, which made for some excellent flowing rugby in their trip to Pulborough.

The first team started on the attack and the forwards took the game by the scruff of the neck, driving over in the rucks and creating quick ball for the backs to move the ball swiftly, allowing Harry Coppin to touch down in the first minute.

Ben Townsend scored his first of the season. Playing at full-back, he followed up another flowing move with great running from the backs to score a try.

Chichester’s scrum-half Fergus Bonar added a third, picking the ball up after another good drive by the forwards. Evading the Pulborough defence he scored his first of the day.

The forwards were soon on the scoresheet. Joseph Watts put his head down and drove over to complete the win.

Finn Crandon and Watts for the forwards and Bonar and Tom Gogarty for the backs helped Chichester play intelligent fast rugby.

The second team started slowly, allowing Pulborough to score two tries without reply before tightening up and producing try-saving tackles.

Oscar McCall and Lee Carter stood out but Chichester lost 3-0.

The second game looked to be going the same way before the forwards secured the ball in a maul and drove forward for Archie Evans to spin off and make it 5-5.

After conceding the next try, Chichester showed great character moving the ball quickly out to the wing. William Redwood touched down to level the scores again.

Pulborough clinched a win by three tries to two in the final minute. Crandon and William Redwood were voted players of the match for their respective teams.
