Rebels totally off-target

WORTHING Football Club failed to get a single shot on target in their final match of their relegation season. They lost their final Premier Division fixture 3-0 away to Ryman League Westfield Cup winners Ashford Town (Middlesex), who needed to win to stay up by avoiding the extra fourth relegation place.

Instead, Harrow Borough dropped into that position and, although have the worst record of the fourth-placed sides in the Ryman League Premier, Northern Premier and Southern League Premier, they may be reprieved if Lancaster City take the voluntary two-division relegation they have requested after going into financial administration. City had 10 points docked because of their failure to stay solvent and ended the Northern Premier season with just one.

Worthing, already relegated, hung onto third-bottom place after Walton & Hersham lost 1-0 at Ramsgate and thus failed to overtake them. After mustering not a shot worth the name in the first half, Rebels got closest to testing the Ashford keeper when Tom Lawley sent a first-time volley over the bar, full-back Joe Keehan sent two efforts wide and Omari Coleman, only a substitute, one.

Gavin Bamford (10min), Gavin Smith (36) and Scott Harris (94) were on target for Ashford.

WORTHING: Banks; J.Keehan, Alexander, Lutwyche, Simpson; Lawley, Lawrence, K.Akehurst, Knee; Brotherton, Andrews. Subs: Coleman (Andrews 50), Axten, Fraser, Ekoku, Hunter gk. Att: 230.

In Division 1 South, where Horsham YMCA, Burgess Hill Town and probably Eastbourne Town will provide Sussex clashes with Rebels next season, Hastings United go into the promotion play-offs against Dover Athletic while Tooting & Mitcham take on Fleet Town. Maidstone United are champions and in the Premier Division next term.

Hampton & Richmond won the Ryman League championship and outright promotion by defeating backmarkers Slough Town 4-2, although at half-time they were only drawing 1-1 and rivals Bromley were ahead 2-0 at Boreham Wood and on schedule to win the title instead. Bromley's scoreline stayed the same.

The sides in the play-off-places on the morning all won to keep Margate and Boreham Wood out of the post-season action for the second promotion place. Bromley will take on AFC Wimbledon and Chelmsford City, who beat Harrow 3-2, face Billercay Town.
