Lewes hold Littlehampton

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club marginally narrowed the gap at the top of the division but it could have been a lot worse for the home side against Lewes Priory on Saturday.

Lewes, chasing 241 to win, were comfortably placed at 132-1 and on course for victory. But, a middle-order collapse which saw six wickets fall for just 66 runs all but ended their run chase and they finished 21 short.

Earlier in the day, Chris Heberlein and Gary Tester had laid the foundations for Littlehampton with a 96-run stand for the opening wicket. Tester was out, just two balls after hitting a four, when caught by Michael Murray off Ian Newman at mid-wicket for 35.

Heberlein completed his first league 50 soon afterwards before he was adjudged lbw to Lewes' Trinidadian overseas player Amit Jaggernauth.

Chris Kirkham and Benn Challen then both quickly fell lbw to Newman which left Littlehampton 153-4. Kirkham felt he had got bat on ball but was caught at first slip anyway so had few complaints.
