Lashings of fun at Horntye

CRICKET and charity were the winners as Hastings Priory contested an entertaining match against Lashings All-Stars at Horntye Park on Tuesday.

The only disappointment was an ill-timed deluge of rain which brought a premature conclusion to a delicately poised encounter.

Lashings, who included the likes of Mark Waugh, Richie Richardson and Jimmy Adams, racked up a blistering 275-6 from their allotted 40 overs but Priory were well in the hunt at 216-6 off 32.1 overs when the heavens opened forcing the match to be declared a draw.

But the main emphasis of the day was on enjoyment and raising money for organisers 1066 Sporting Club who support young sporting talent in the area. Chairman and chief executive Terry Avann said: "It was excellent. In all there were over 1,000 people. It was a very successful day and it's very much on the cards that we will do it again next year but perhaps in a different format."

Lashing piled on the runs with Sherwin Campbell (74), Grant Flower (50), Waugh (40) and Junior Murray (32 not out) all enjoying themselves.

George Campbell (89) and Jason Finch (45) led the Priory chase but with a thrilling finish on the cards the heavens opened and play had to be abandoned.
