It'll be Wimbledon comeback for Lee

MARTIN LEE is back at Wimbledon. The Worthing tennis product has earned a wildcard into the singles and the doubles for next week '” the draw is tomorrow (Friday) '” and emphasised his vast improvement since injury.

The former Davis Cup player has risen from No 900 to 251 in a year and is still only 28.

The left-hander has appeared in the doubles for the past two seasons. He was a Wimbledon Junior Doubles champion with James Trotman and got to the second round last year with Ross Hutchins. Lee is now No 176 in world doubles, his highest, and his partner this time will be Jonathan Marray.

But he has been absent from the Wimbledon singles for three years. That changed at the weekend when he finished third in the Wimbledon wildcard tournament. Only the top three got a card.

In 2001, Lee reached the second round of Wimbledon and made the Newport Rhode Island post-Wimbledon grasscourt tournament final, defeating James Blake '” the Stella Artois beaten finalist at the weekend '” but in the last three years, injuries have begun to bite. But he has been injury-free for 12 months.

And he won two qualifying rounds to reach the Stella Artois first round proper at Queen's Club last week.

Lee commented: "It's good to be going back there in the singles. I haven't played there for three years and it's a very good feeling. I've always played well there in the past."
