They were running in memory of Ian Thorn, who recently passed away. Ian was, for many years, a teacher at the High School for Boys and also coached on a Saturday morning at Fishbourne Romans FC.

It was there that many of the boys first met Ian and received some of their early football experiences. Ian’s son, Ryan, is the Chichester team’s goalkeeper. Later on, at the Chichester City Youth end-of-season awards evening, the proceeds from the raffle were added to money raised at the morning’s run and a sum of £700 will now go to Ian’s favourite charity, Send a Cow.

This will be enough to provide a dairy cow along with training in animal husbandry and welfare to a family in East Africa.

* Bognor Regis Town Youth are starting a new under-16 team and are holding an open training session.

The team will play on Sundays in the Arun & Chichester Youth League and have already attracted a number of good-quality, strong players – however they are looking for more local talent to strengthen the squad.

The coaching team will hold an open training session on Tuesday, July 14, at West Meads playing fields, for any child currently in Year 10.

It runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

A spokesman for the club said: “Come and be part of something new and exciting. This could be the right time to kick-start your football and really enjoy the great environment the new coaching team have created.”

Players need to wear the correct footwear and bring own water. Shin pads are recommended.
