Swans not in a rush to appoint new boss

Last year’s assistant boss Matt Nelmes has remained at the Recreation Ground side alongside coach John Rhodie after the untimely departure of Peter Matthews last week.

The former manager was forced to step down owing to work commitments at the 11th hour ahead of the season kicking-off on Tuesday.

Swans have received a number of applications as the search for a replacement goes on and while Dyer has reiterated the timing wasn’t ideal, the Storrington stalwart has not ruled out an in-house appointment.

While admitting they may have someone in place by Tuesday, Dyer said: “It depends who comes through at the moment. We are not rushing into it.

“We have had three or four people come in for it and there could be another one, but there is a chance we could be keeping it in-house.

“We have two new reserve team managers, who are doing it at the moment as John Rhodie, our coach, is on holiday, but last year’s assistant Matt Nelmes has also stayed on.

“We took Pete on with the long term in mind, at least three years, but these things happen and he got a good chance in taking the Ford 3G on, it’s just massively unfortunate with the timing.

“It has not been ideal timing as lots of managers already have jobs. We had 13 or 14 applications last time, but that was at the end of the season when people are looking for jobs.”

With uncertainty on the managerial front, Swans have been unable to bring in any new signings.

They have retained the majority of last season’s side, but Josh Gibbons is taking a season off, while Josey Stakim has joined his local side Lancing United.

Swans kick-off their campaign on Tuesday night at home to Billingshurst in the Peter Bentley Cup.
