Spice is alright after injury scare

Sidley United captain and defensive linchpin Danny Spice has made a remarkable recovery from a serious-looking injury.

Spice was left motionless after an opponent landed on his back as he effected a sliding tackle in the Sussex County Football League Division One match away to Wick last weekend.

The game was held up for around 45 minutes while an ambulance arrived and took Spice to Worthing Hospital, but speaking on Wednesday morning, Sidley manager John Lambert wasn’t ruling him out of playing on Saturday.

Lambert said: “I can’t really see him being fit for Saturday, but you never know with him. We’ll see how he feels at the end of the week. He’s not ruled himself out and I’m not ruling him out because he would play with one leg if he could.”

The impact of the challenge caused Spice’s back to go into spasm and his eyes frequently closed, leading Lambert to admit “for one horrible moment we were really worried about him”.

But he started to improve while in hospital and came home that evening. The doctor thought Spice opened two of his vertebrae and although badly bruised, there was no break.

Spice even hobbled along to Sidley’s under-18 game on Sunday morning, but was told not to work this week and has been taking some strong painkillers to aid his recovery.
