Make-or-break Easter for Hornets

Should the Hornets pull off the great escape in the South Division their two games over the weekend will prove crucial.

With five games left, Horsham travel to Walton & Hersham on Saturday before hosting Corinthian Casuals on Easter Monday.

Cant’s side sit four points adrift at the foot of the table and five points from safety, but he is still confident they can beat relegation.

There are no doubts from the joint boss that they need to win both games this weekend.

He said: “Obviously, it is down to this weekend as if we get no points we are probably gone and six points gives us a chance. It’s a crucial weekend.

“Six points is what we have got to do. They are both good teams, but luckily they have not got a lot to play for, unlike last weekend when Whyteleafe did and Faversham may have the following weekend.

“We have two teams that cannot go up or down which is a good thing.

“We have got to win probably four out of the five. We have got to win at the weekend and go from there.

“We could win all five and it might not be enough and we could win three and it might be enough.

“We still think we can do it and we certainly have not given up – we still think we can get out of it.

“We are capable of winning football matches although on Saturday (a 3-1 defeat to Whyteleafe) we let ourselves down by conceding two poor goals to start with. I did not think that much of them.

“We have to eliminate the mistakes and keep in games as long as we can. We create chances so we know we can win games, we just need a bit of consistency.”

Cant has also said their run-in could spring up some surprises with Faversham in the front running for the top play-off spot. Two wins over the weekend could all but seal them a home tie in the play-offs and he feels they may rest players, while Ramsgate’s games in hand could disadvantage them.

He added: “Next Saturday will be tough. You could say if we were to lose one that would be it - although I am not being negative.

“They have got something to go for although if they are comfortable they may rest players for the play-offs, you don’t know.

“It’s also tough when you have extra games and them coming thick and fast. We have to do our bit first though.”

The Hornets hope to welcome back Lewis Hamilton on Saturday along with midfielder Tom Bold to an almost fully-fit squad. Tom Vickers is 50-50 to make Monday’s game.
