The England women’s team have just completed the most successful of the country’s World Cup campaigns since 1966. And now, at last, they can go back to being “mothers, partners and daughters”, according to the official England team Twitter. (The Independent)

At just after nine o’clock the champion Novak Djokovic smashed a winner on number one court to take the fourth set in his encounter with the South African Kevin Anderson. Losing the first two sets 6-7 6-7, Djokovic looked on the very brink of elimination. Instead, a display of stubborn single mindedness took him back into contention as he won the next two sets to tie things up. At which point the referee intervened to delay the conclusion until the light returned in the morning. The champion lives on to fight on another day.
