Gilmour joined Albion from Chelsea on deadline day – signing a four-year contract in a deal reportedly worth £9 million – and is expected to feature in Sunday’s game against Leicester.

When asked about his new signing, Potter said: “I’m excited, I think it is an exciting signing for us. Billy’s a very able footballer and great character. I think he will fit into the group and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"He brings a bit of competition in that area and I'm really pleased to get him.

"The impressive thing about him is his technical capabilities, he can take the ball and deals with it well. I think he benefits from structure and the team functioning well.

"So that's our job, to find the right role for him and for the others guys to compliment him. I think he will have a very successful time here.”

The Scottish midfielder burst onto the scene when giving a man-of-the-match display on his debut for Chelsea – helping Frank Lampard’s side to win their FA Cup fifth round tie 2-0 against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old was named as a substitute when the Blues won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel in 2021 and gave another man-of-the-match performance when representing Scotland in their 0-0 draw with England in the EURO 2020 group stages.

However, the young player struggled whilst on loan at Norwich last season, playing 28 times as the club were relegated from the top flight.

Since returning to West London, Gilmour has not been a part of Tuchel’s plans and was allowed to leave the club to join Brighton.

Potter said despite these setbacks, he was impressed by the young player’s personality and character.

The Albion manager said: “Throughout life you acquire experiences, some are positive and some aren't. That’s the life of being a footballer, but his personality is very impressive.

"Whatever experience he has had will grow him as a person and we will help him on the next stage of his journey. We are excited for him and excited to have him here.

"Billy’s fortunate he has some good older players around that he can take some stuff from. He’s a young man and has a lot of footballing experiences already, which is positive and now he is a place where we have a good environment and group which he can add to himself and also learn from.”

Potter also admitted he was relieved the window had now closed until January.

It has been a busy summer on the south coast for transfer activity – with the high-profile sales of Yves Bissouma, Marc Cucurella and Neal Maupay generating around £102m for the club.

Despite being linked with a Maupay replacement on deadline day, Potter said there was no temptation to spend the money generated, as the right player was not available.

Potter explained: "Its never a temptation to spend the money. Its more if the right person and the right player is available.

"If not, there is no temptation at all, its as simple as that. You are always looking to strengthen and help the group, unless the right players comes along it doesn't make a lot of sense to do anything.

“The group is really strong, I like the group and I like the team. There is a good togetherness and good options, we have to keep working now. I won’t be the first manager that says there are glad the window is shut.”
