We are back in with a chance – Askew

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club’s James Askew believes his side are back in with a chance of lifting the West Sussex Invitation League title.

Littlehampton are just 14 points behind now joint leaders Arundel and West Chiltington, following their win over St Andrews. Felbridge are also now in the title hunt and are just 15 points off the top.

Arundel fell to a heavy 155-run defeat against Felbridge & Sunnyside, while West Chiltington could only claim a winning draw at Broadwater.

With three games remaining, Arundel and West Chiltington are joint leaders with 314 points. However, Littlehampton have 300 and Felbridge are just a point behind.

Askew feels his side have given themselves a great chance following their latest success and said: “We are back in with a shout for the title now.

“I think everyone thought it was all over when we lost against Horsham Trinity.

“However, we picked up a winning draw over Arundel and now they have dropped points this week.

“It’s going to be so tight, with Felbridge and West Chiltington in with a chance as well.

“We play Felbridge on Saturday and whoever wins that will be right in contention.”

St Andrews chose to bat first on Saturday.

Alex Ellis hit 81, while knocks of 34 from Scott Lonsdale and 32 not out from Henry Tagg helped them post 217 for nine from their 49 overs.

Askew led the way in the wicket-taking department as he took four for 53. Ryan Budd and Nathan Perry also chipped in with two wickets each.

Littlehampton needed to make a solid start in reply and they did exactly that.

Askew and Perry (44) put on 151 before the first wicket went. Askew has been in outstanding form this season and that continued as he hit 147 – his seventh century this season as he moved on to 1,211 runs for the year.

His innings put his side in a strong position, before Ally James (four not out) and Jack Turner (six not out) led their side to victory in 37.2 overs.
