Malcolm Johnson’s side edged out Middleton by one wicket after Josh Beeslee remarkably hit a six over point off the penultimate ball, although Bexhill dropped just outside the two promotion places in Sussex Division Two after Goring-by-Sea comfortably saw off struggling Pulborough.

Middleton amassed 245-6 after choosing to bat thanks largely to a second wicket partnership of 159 between Will Burrows (108) and Rob Willway (93). Andrew Williams bagged five wickets for the third time in four league games and new ball partner Joe Cox was the other wicket-taker.

Tim Hambridge (51) and Malcolm Johnson (29) got Bexhill’s reply off to a decent start with an opening stand of 89, but the innings then went into decline and the hosts looked in trouble at 195-8.

Jack Richardson batted superbly for 66 off only 38 balls with seven fours and three sixes until falling with 10 needed. The last pair of Beeslee (12 not out off 11 balls) and Cox (3 not out off three balls), however, guided Bexhill to a vital victory in their promotion bid.

Standings (all played 10 matches): 1 Eastbourne 260pts, 2 Goring-by-Sea 228, 3 BEXHILL 225, 4 Findon 205, 5 CROWHURST PARK 186, 6 St James’s Montefiore 181, 7 Ifield 168, 8 Middleton 140, 9 Pulborough 101, 10 Glynde & Beddingham 89.
