Pagham set the pace to hand Steyning a first defeat

Steyning suffered their first defeat of the new season as Pagham made it three wins from three to set the early pace.

Put in, hosts Steyning went from 48-1 to 66-5 before being bowled out for 121 as only Matt Sewell with 39 and Gary Hunt with 31 truly applied themselves.

An excellent effort with the ball kept the hosts’ hopes alive but Pagham snuck home with two wickets in hand to stay top of the Division 3 West table.

Steyning skipper Dave Kennett said: “It was a close game and the frustrating thing is we were about 30 runs short of winning the game. We didn’t apply ourselves as we should, our top seven played loose shots to get out and it was only thanks to Matt and Gary that we got to a reasonable total.”

For Pagham Michael Hales took 4-22 and Wayne Green 3-26.

In reply Andy Isaacs took 4-20 and Don Ramesh Subasinghe 2-57 as Steyning stayed in the hunt.

There were some nerves from the visitors late in their chase but skipper Stuart Rutter’s unbeaten 22 helped them cross the line for a third straight victory.

“As a team we bowled well and were a bit unlucky, with a catch at slip off our overseas given not out and balls just not going to hand,” Kennett added.
