The wicket looked perfect and Goring had no hesitation in batting when they won the toss. The openers set about the Chichester bowling from the off, and were into the 30s before the Chichester attack of Faulkner and Davies got their length.

Davies picked up the aggressive Lyons, who was well taken at slip by Hubbard.

This brought in the dangerous De Beer, who immediately set about the bowling, supported by the watchful Thomas.

De Beer was ferocious on anything loose, and reached his century in 74 balls. Thomas, more watchful, took 153 balls to reach his century, finishing on 122 not out when Goring eventually declared at 303 for three.

For Chichester, Davies picked up two for 56, but Jay Hartard was the pick of the bowlers with his leg spin.
