Busy winter for Aldwick cricketers sets up big summer

Despite playing a game usually played with the sun shinning over proceedings, the winter months have been a busy period of activity for Aldwick Cricket Club.

They have hosted their annual presentation dinner, held their annual meeting, entered two teams in the six-a-side winter indoor league, started pre-season nets at Arundel Castle, negotiated – subject to a visa – the services of an overseas player and signed up for the first time to the West Sussex Invitation League Sunday 20/20 Cup.

They are also in serious negotiations with Arun District Council to secure a lease on the Felpham Oval, confirmed the fixtures for a week-long tour of the Isle of Wight in June and have secured a sponsorship deal with the Cardamon Bay restaurant. Phew!

At the presentation dinner, first team skipper Joel Lodge won the batting award with an average of 41.75. Best aggregate went to Alex Cooper with 865 and highest score to Leigh Monk, 117 not out.

The bowlers’ awards were headed by Keelan Belcher with an average of 11.65. Most wickets went to Ollie Smith 73 and best bowling performance to Harry Rosser with an incredible seven for 26.

Adam Robinson held the most catches (18), Ryan Purvis was man of the match most times, the captain’s award was presented to Arthur Bradbury and Josh Sargeant and Scott Bingham featured heavily in the colt awards.

At the annual meeting, following last year’s double promotion for the two league sides, Joel Lodge (first) and Matt Robinson (second) were popular choices to retain their captaincy for their campaigns in WSIL divisions two and six respectively.

Ollie Smith (first) and Harry Rosser (second) were voted in as vice-captains and the remaining club captain vacancies were fulfilled by Ollie Smith (Sunday), Dion Sampson (Acorns) and Ian Guppy (midweek) and Keelan Belcher (WSIL 20/20 Cup).

The Felpham Oval has had serious TLC over the winter months from groundsman Arthur Bradbury and his assistants and all looks good for 2015.

Sunday nets take place between 10am and midday every Sunday until Easter – all welcome – and if his visa is granted the club will welcome 23-year old Kabir Hossain from the Orient Cricket Academy in Dakha.
