Arundel remain top as title race hots up

THE battle for the West Sussex Invitation League title is now a four-team race after leaders Arundel Cricket Club went down by 155 runs at home to Felbridge & Sunnyside on Saturday.

Arundel are level on points at the top with West Chiltington, while Littlehampton are third, 14 points off the top, and fourth-placed Felbridge are just a point further back.

Felbridge elected to bat first after winning the toss at Arundel and openers Jack Williams and John Connelly shared a 66-run opening stand.

Connelly was the first to fall, bowled by Kieran Hornsby for 42, after striking ten fours from 38 balls, before Williams added 94 for the second wicket with Aaron Willsher.

Willsher was caught by wicketkeeper Joel Crook off left-arm spinner Neil Chitty for 41 and Chitty soon had a second wicket when he bowled Thomas Sullivan for three, with the score on 174.

Williams and Chirag Chauhan then added 101 for the fourth wicket, before Williams was caught by Charlie Horne off Mark Barry’s bowling for 133, after smashing 24 fours and two sixes off 131 balls.

Chauhan finished unbeaten on 68, from only 40 balls, as he hit five fours and five sixes and Jamie Parrett hit 11 not out as Felbridge ended their 49 overs on 304-4.

Arundel made a steady start to their reply with a 54-run partnership between Crook and captain Joe Bain.

Bain was caught by Connelly off Jamie Parrett for 28, before Parrett had Crook caught by Sam Rintoul for 20 with the score on 72.

Tom Gaskin smashed 23 from only ten balls, before he was the third wicket to fall with the score on 83. Barry (one) was then bowled by Rhodri Lewis one run later, which left Arundel 84-4.

Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with Matthew Reynolds (26), Charlie Horne (11) and Sean Twine (ten) the only other batsmen to reach double figures as Arundel were all out for 149 in 36.1 overs.

Lewis led the way with the ball for Felbridge and claimed 6-68 from 15 overs, while Parrett and Chris Richens both finished with 2-28.

On Saturday, Arundel travel to Pulborough, West Chiltington entertain Horsham Trinity and Littlehampton are away to Felbridge.
