All Lindfield teams win and firsts win sixth on the bounce

Having won the toss and electing to bowl, Ansty bowled tight lines via Jack Palser and Jethro Menzies and had Lindfield pegged right back for the first 15 overs. Palser removed Simon Shivnarain for a duck and Menzies dismissed Tom Howard as Lindfield’s usual free-scoring approach was restricted.

However, Geoffrey Lawrence (37) and Hayden James’ (69) partnership of 61 and Chris Sawyer’s (26) eye-watering partnership with James worth 75 showed Lindfield’s middle order capable in Max O’Dowd’s absence. Ansty’s bowlers picked up timely wickets and late wickets by Menzies, who took 5 in the match, restricted Lindfield to 216-9 from their 53 overs.

With a quick outfield and a pitch that had flattened out, Ansty would have had Lindfield’s total well within their sights.

However, Shane Yelverton quickly made in-roads into the Ansty batsmen removing both opener as they were 14-2. Captain Jonathan Young and Jethro Menzies put up some dogged resistance against the moving ball, but Hayden James quickly resumed his wicket taking ability as he removed Young and Leo Anderson in consecutive overs. Meanwhile, Menzies was taking the attack to the bowlers before holing out for 43 off Matthew Yelverton as Ansty found themselves 79-6.

Luke Forster’s 35 was the only notable score from the Ansty tail which found itself succumbing to Shivnarain’s spin. Ansty finished 142ao in 33 overs.

Lindfield CC 3rd XI v Balcombe CC 2nd XI

Lindfield 3rd XI had a convincing 124 run win over Balcombe 2nd XI to consolidate their mid table position. After being asked to bat first Lindfield scored 211 all out with Mike Newcombe (33), Alex Pinard (31), Rob Minter (24), Charlie Pugh (20) all contributing on a difficult pitch. The pick of the Balcombe bowlers was Guy Dutton who took 4 for 38.

The Balcombe innings was soon in trouble, as they had no answer to the left arm bowling of William Spence and the lively Seb Masters and were reeling at 37 for 7.

Despite some resistance from the tail the innings was blown away as Balcombe were bowled out for 87. William Spence finished with fine figures of 5 for 16 in 10 overs whilst Seb Masters 2 for 14 in 9 overs. The feature of the match was the fine fielding by the Lindfield team as they took some difficult catches.

Lindfield 4th XI v Balcombe 3rd XI

Lindfield 4th XI continued their recent good form with an excellent 6-wicket win against Balcombe 3rd XI to move out of the relegation zone.

Lindfield won the toss and asked Balcombe to bat and were soon regretting their decision as Balcombe raced to 247 for 3 dec from 45 overs (Harvey Le Flemming 102nt, Nick Beecroft 72). Nigel Cannon was the pick of the bowlers and toiled away without much luck but was not helped by Lindfield’s fielding as they dropped 8 catches during the match.

In reply, Lindfield started brightly with 13 year old James McCammon scoring 43 who batted with maturity and power to set the platform for the senior batsmen to continue the run chase.

The match was decided by the 3rd wicket partnership of 163 with some beautiful stroke making by a welcome return to form by Colin Mayes (73) and a master class innings by Graham Page (82*) with both batsmen scoring a run a ball. The match went to the final over before Graham Page hit straight 6 to win the match with 4 balls to spare.
