Consolidation the key for cricket clubs

CONSOLIDATION is the watchword emanating from both Sidley and Bexhill as they gear up for the new Sussex Cricket League Division Two season.

Sidley finished bottom of the table last season but the signing of Pakistani sensation Imran Javed has boosted hopes of securing a mid-table finish while Bexhill face a tall order to live up to last season's top five finish following the departure of Aussie sensation Sam Roberts.

Sidley captain Scott Woodroffe said: "The guys are raring to go again. It's my first full season as captain so I'm looking forward to it. It would be silly to be expecting to be in the top three."

He went on: "If we get off to a good start like we did a couple of seasons ago when we finished third and get the confidence going that will be key."

The campaign gets under way with the long journey to Preston Nomads on Saturday May 3.

Bexhill counterpart Steve Phillimore is also not setting his sights too high. He said: "Promotion is out of the question really - we've got to be realistic. We want to try and win every game or at least play well in every game.

"I'm not expecting our Aussie (Peter Lewis) to do the same as Sam but he will be a different sort of player. We need some other people around to perform. Some people did underachieve a little bit last season and they have got to stand up and be counted."

Bexhill open their campaign by hosting Roffey at the Polegrove, starting at 1.15pm.
