Award for Charlotte

Fletching's Commonwealth Gold Medal hero Charlotte Kerwood capped a fantastic year by winning the BBC South Young Sportswoman of 2002 on Sunday night.

Charlotte (right), who won the gold medal in the double trap clay pigeon shooting event at this Summer's Manchester Games, is the youngest female shooter ever to represent her country.

The 16-year-old was nominated for two awards at the prestigious BBC South Sports Awards, which took place at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton on Sunday.

Charlotte's dad, Dan, said his daughter knew of the nominations three weeks before the awards night, but added that it was still a great surprise to win an award. 'She was chuffed to bits to win,' he said. 'She was probably more nervous collecting the award, than winning her gold medal at the Games!'

Dan spoke of his delight at seeing his daughter receive the award. 'We are very proud of Charlotte,' he said. 'She deserves her spell in the limelight because she has worked very hard to get here.'

He also spoke of the influence of Charlotte's manager, Terry Allen, who was invited to accompany Charlotte to the Awards: 'He deserves to be recognised for his efforts too'.

Charlotte rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest sporting names in the South. However, on Monday morning she had to back in school to sit a mock GCSE exam.
