Worthing's gardens under wraps

WORTHING'S trickling Triton will stay under wraps until its grand re-emergence next month.

The bronze statue was "rescued" from its battered perch in the old Aquarena boating pool to form the centrepiece of a 70,000 facelift to the sunken garden at Steyne Gardens.

Chris Bradley, the borough council's parks and foreshore manager, said this week: "There is more fencing to put in place before we can open the area, and we are still waiting for two new metal plaques to place on the garden's walls, which will give more up-to-date information than the previous ones.

"We hope to finally open the gardens around May 8."

Mr Bradley said the Triton would not be providing a towering fountain. "The water will just trickle out; the statue will be an attractive water feature."

The garden is being revamped as part of Worthing council's "Greening the Borough" improvement programme under the Disability Discrimination Act.
