Welcome back!!

LITTLEHAMPTON and East Preston firefighters were given a special thank you yesterday afternoon when they were invited to the newly re-opened Smugglers Roost pub in Rustington.

The building was badly damaged by fire in September and during restoration work, a haul of gold sovereigns worth 250 was found in the foundations.

The pub's owners Compass Taverns decided to donate this sum to the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund, based in Littlehampton, and invited the firefighters to receive the cheque on the charity's behalf.

"It gives us great pleasure to welcome back these firemen and thank them with this donation. Local firemen will always be very welcome here at the Smugglers Roost!" said Compass Taverns' director Trevor Baker.

Littlehampton fire station commander Trevor Worsfold said: "It's a really nice gesture of Compass Taverns to give this to the benevolent fund.

"It's great that the crews who attended the fire are appreciated for the job they have done."

And East Preston fire station commander Jon Mays echoed Mr Worsfold's words: "I think it is a wonderful expression of their gratitude. It's that type of gratitude that makes our jobs so worthwhile.

Newly appointed manager Ron Anderson says customers are delighted with the new-look Smugglers Roost.

"It's been very busy, there have not been enough hours in the day! Customers have all commented on how pleased they are that we are open again," he enthused.

"I would just like to say thank you to everyone for the support they have given since I arrived here."
