Wedding couple's gift to hospital

Bexhill couple Andrew and Sheila Clifford took fundraising to new levels when they tied the knot.

They asked guests at their wedding to donate money to King's College Hospital in London rather than buy gifts. The couple made their vows in August, and friends and family have since generously raised a total of 2,300 for two charities.

The funds raised have been split between Dawson Ward at King's College Hospital and Cancer Research UK.

Andrew was an inpatient at King's for six weeks during May 2007. He was referred to the hospital for specialist liver treatment after suffering from gall bladder and pancreas problems.

Andrew said: "I was an inpatient at King's for quite a while and during my stay there, we decided to get married. My partner Sheila and I have been living together for 15 years so we had pretty much everything we needed, and decided to raise money for the hospital instead of having wedding presents. It's great to be able to give something back to the staff who cared for me."

King's is a specialist liver centre and treats patients with liver conditions from all over the UK and further a field.
