Wealden councillors agree to look into charging for parking

CAR park charging has moved one step closer in the Wealden area.

At a Wealden District Council cabinet meeting today (Monday) members agreed unanimously that 'detailed proposals be investigated' for off street car park charges when the full council meets next week.

This could include setting up an annual voucher scheme.

The council is under pressure to set up kerbside recycling for all properties by 2010.

This will create a budget shortfall of 400,000.

Charging car owners to park their cars has been proposed as a way of meeting costs.

The money will also be used to subsidise affordable housing.

A petition containing 8,000 signatures was sent to the council by Hailsham residents opposed to car park charging.

Around 6,500 signatures were also collected in Crowborough.
