At a debate in the House of Commons last week Dr Turner backed a call to replace nuclear power and dwindling fossil fuels with energy from wave and tidal sources.

The Government is considering developing 18 offshore wind farms around the UK coastline which would use natural resources to power underwater turbines.

Dr Turner is a member of the parliamentary Science and Technology Select Committee which has been pressing for more research into the potential of the abundant energy resource.

He said: 'I believe there is no place for further expansion of nuclear energy when we have sustainable alternatives like wave and tidal power. It is safer, cheaper and less controversial than nuclear.

The first benefits of wave power could be reaped within five years and up to 50,000 new jobs created, he added.
