Tribute to former Mayor

COUNCILLORS stood in silence at Rother's annual meeting on Wednesday in tribute to a former member and one-time Bexhill town mayor, Clive Butchers, who died at home on Thursday last week aged 81.

Born in Camber but brought up in Bexhill, Clive was first elected to the district council in 1981 and served in local government for more than 10 years.

He became Mayor of Bexhill in May 1987.

A former Regimental Sergeant Major in the Scots Guards, he served in Malaya during the communist troubles and was on duty in the Mall for the Queen’s Coronation in 1953.

After leaving the Army in 1970, he became a prominent member of the Guards’ Association’s branch in Eastbourne and his support for many voluntary causes included welfare work for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families’ Association. (SSAFA)

Clive was a founder member of both Pebsham Community Association and Little Common Football Club, and while mayor, his chosen charity was the Bexhill Youth Centre centenary appeal. At the time of his death, he was secretary of the Sussex Mayors’ Association.

Many will also remember him as a vintage car enthusiast - his pride and joy was a 1938 Morris Eight.

Clive’s wife, Sylvia, whom he married in 1951, died just over a year ago. He leaves a son, Malcolm, daughters Carol and Sally, and several grandchildren. His funeral will be held at Eastbourne Crematorium on Friday, June 10 at 10am.
