Crash near Arundel leaves two “critical”

TWO people were seriously injured in a crash near Arundel yesterday afternoon (Sunday, August 12).

An elderly couple from Chichester, both aged 73, were said to be “critical but stable” in the Royal Sussex County Hospital at Brighton today, following a collision between two cars on the A29 at Fairmile Bottom, Madehurst.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 2.35pm, and involved a Land Rover Discovery 4x4, towing a caravan, and a Land Rover Freelander. Police are also looking for a horsebox that was immediately in front of the Freelander.

The 73-year-old man from Chichester, who was driving the Freelander, was taken by road to the hospital and his passenger was airlifted there by helicopter.

PC Glen McArthur, from the road policing unit, said: “The road was closed for six hours and we thank drivers for their patience while we investigated.

“We are keen to talk to anyone who saw what happened. Please would they contact police on 101, quoting Operation Allsworth.”
