TOUGH DECISION AHEAD ON POLICE TAX LEVEL

SUSSEX Police Authority members meeting at Chichester to set the police element of council tax for 2007-08 next Thursday (15 February) have been warned that they face a very difficult decision.

Three options are being presented to members:

'¢ Option A will require an increase of 11p per week (4.98%) for Band D council taxpayers and provide a budget of 236.43 million, an increase of 4.04% on 2006-07.

'¢ Option B would result in an increase of 13p per week (5.99%) for a 237.15 million budget (up 4.36%).

'¢ Option C would provide for the full mandatory investment in protective services at a cost of an extra 16p per week (7.39%) creating a budget of 238.15 million (up 4.8%).

Authority chairman, Peter Jones, who will recommend Option B, said: 'We have a very difficult period in front of us. The Government has already planned below inflation increases in our core funding for 2008-10, has warned that 'excessive' increases in council tax precepts will be capped and yet demands that we spend more money bringing our protective services to a mandatory level.'
