Top author gets into swing for golf event

Bestselling thriller writer Peter James helped to raise more than £10,000 at the annual Peter James Golf Classic in aid of Horsham-based children's charity Action Medical Research.

More than 90 golfers took to the course at Haywards Heath Golf Club on Friday, September 2, to help save and change the lives of sick and disabled babies and children.

The author of the Roy Grace murder mystery novels greeted the 23 teams at the end of their games and joined them for lunch before addressing the audience about the importance of funding for research.

This was the eighth Peter James Golf Classic, which was organised by Action Medical Research’s Haywards Heath committee and sponsored by Harwoods motor dealership group, and the popular event has now raised more than £85,000 for Action Medical Research.

“I’m delighted to support Action Medical Research and to be able to help them a little with the incredible work they do,” said Peter. “I’ve been aware of the charity for many years, including their pioneering work contributing to the development of the first polio vaccine – there isn’t anyone

“I know who hasn’t been touched in some way by their work. I have a big interest in medicine, often writing about medical themes, so it’s wonderful to help make a difference on behalf of Action Medical Research, especially when medical research is so poorly funded, especially for children.”

The winning team, the McLaren Clark Group, made up of Will and Chris McLaren Clark, Ellie White and Kevin McKenzie, took home £400 worth of golf vouchers, while Neil Sawyers from the Harwoods Group hit a fabulous hole-in-one and earned a three-night holiday in Portugal.

Sarah Baldock, the event organiser, would like to thank all those who so generously support the day, making it the success it has become, as well as Haywards Heath Golf Club whose help and advice has been invaluable.

For more than 60 years Action Medical Research has helped pioneer treatments and ways to prevent disease that have benefited millions of people in the UK and across the world.

Research it has funded has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound in pregnancy, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths.

The charity is currently funding research into premature birth, meningitis, Down syndrome and epilepsy, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
