Three villages celebrate new relationship with fun weekend

The process of preparing a Neighbourhood Plan has brought three quite different villages together.

To celebrate the new relationship between Walberton, Binsted and Fontwell, a full weekend of activities is planned on Saturday and Sunday, on Walberton Playing Fields and in Walberton Village Hall.

WalBinFont includes a fête, big picnic, sports afternoon and live music.

Suzanne Clark, vice chairman of Walberton Parish Council and chairman of Walberton, Binsted and Fontwell Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, said: “This is a positive outcome from a Neighbourhood Plan.

“The villages, all part of the parish of Walberton, are quite different in their character and were occasionally somewhat insular.

“However the process of preparing a Neighbourhood Plan has brought the community together, so what did the villagers decide to do? Celebrate of course.”

WalBinFont Fête is on Saturday from 2pm to 5pm and visitors will include Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert.

Organisations attending include the parish council, National Trust, history group, Mothers’ Union, Girguilding and Neighbourhood Watch.

Classic cars will be on display and there will also be a range of stalls. Entry is free.

From 7.30pm, Willie Austen Band will be playing and tables and chairs will be provided for people to take along their own supper. Tickets are £12.50 for adults, £8 for six to 15-year-olds. Contact Suzanne on 01243 543766 for more details.

On Sunday at 10.30am, there will be a combined church service in Walberton Village Hall for St Mary’s Walberton, St Mary’s Binsted and Walberton Baptist Chapel.

A Big Picnic Lunch will follow from 12.30pm to 2pm with live music, then its Sports for All from 2pm to 5pm.

Old-fashioned races, a tennis competition, stoolball and new age kurling, suitable for the less able-bodied, will be set up.

Rounding off the weekend will be live music from two residents from 5pm to 7pm.

There will be a mobile bar on site all weekend, selling draught beers, wine and hot pies.

All profit from the weekend will be shared between the Sussex Snowdrop Trust and the villages’ POP (Protect our Parish) fund.
