Swim fundraising success at a stroke

More than 100 swimmers splashed their way to a record in the Bognor Regis Swimathon.

The 33 teams of entrants into the latest of the annual charity fundraisers held by the town's Lions Club completed 3,260 lengths of 25m to cover 81.5km.

This is equal to the distance between Bognor and Wimbledon and is the furthest swum since the event was launched in the 1990s.

Just as importantly, the exertions at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham resulted in more than 3,700 being raised for the swimmers' chosen causes.

Lions press officer Richard Johns said: "We would like to thank all those who took part, their sponsors, all our helpers and the staff at the leisure centre for making the evening such a success.

"Next year's event is already booked and early applications are encouraged. Anyone wishing to apply may do so by contacting me on 01243 262240."
