Officers were called to a temporary building in Rope Walk, following a tip-off about a possible cannabis factory in the area.

Police broke into the property and searched it but no cannabis was found.

However, propagation equipment suspected of being ready to grow the drug was discovered inside the 40ft by 8ft container.

Robert Boyce, who lives in Rope Walk, witnessed the raid and likened the den to ‘something from a science-fiction film’.

He said that when the electricity to the 680-watt light bulbs were switched on he was startled by how bright it was.

“Suddenly, it lit up like the lights of a space ship from a science-fiction movie,” Mr Boyce added. “It was blinding for a moment.”

Mr Boyce explained that police had been tipped off by a resident who became suspicious of new ventilation holes that had been cut in the side of the container.

Police are now asking anyone who knows about drugs in their area to call 101, email [email protected] or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
