Exhibitors at the annual West Chiltington Horticultural Summer Show again produced a great display of blooms, potted plants and vegetables on Saturday June 11.

Despite the indifferent weather this spring, visitors to the show were able to enjoy some beautiful displays, notably the roses, whether as single specimens, sprays or collections in bowls. Winner of the National Rose Society’s Bronze Medal for the best specimen rose on display were Sheila and Norman Kirby while Denis and Pat Wright won the Society Cup for most points in the show with a range of high quality flowers and vegetables. A philadelphus, entered by Sue Unthank, was judged best exhibit in the show.

The judges were impressed by the quality of the exhibits and were pleased to see how the Society had introduced new categories, such as a pot of growing parsley, to encourage more members to enter the show. In fact, there were in total 179 entries, an increase on last year, with a number of new entrants.

Jean Hoadley, the show organiser, said that she was delighted with the number of entries and the high standard. “The week before the show is always a nervous time as I never know just how many entries there will be, but members have again turned up trumps with a wonderful display of flowers and produce” said Jean. Pippa Honess, Chairman of the Society, thanked Jean and everyone who had helped make the show such a great success, encouraging members to get growing ready for the Autumn Show in September.
