I would like to commence my column this week with an appeal to the community as a whole . I have been asked by the Staplecross Village Hall Committee to ascertain what additional activities, ~if any~ you would like to see your Village Hall made use of. Would you like to see more sports take place in the hall ? The floor is already marked out to accommodate a badminton court and this game has already been played here previously, so would you like to see it revived? Would you be interested in playing here, either with friends as individual bookings or as a social group or sports club?. Another suggestion has been for an indoor bowls group. ~ again, would you be interested in joining in this activity?. What about a cinema club ? This could be run perhaps, on a monthly rota, with new releases and/or top titles or firm favourites being shown here. Would you like any educational or hobby clubs set up for you, or your childrens’ enjoyment or benefit? How about the Brownies,the Cubs, Girl Guides, Scouts or Rangers?. Perhaps Photography, Ballet, specialised dance groups ie Salsa, Rumba, Tap or Olde Time or Ballroom dancing classes. Maybe an athletic group, or a keep fit or weigh loss programme arranged. Computer tuition,or any coaching of some description, or any culinary arts, like a wine club, or sugarcraft or cake decoration, would be of interest to you. The choices are endless. Some may not be viable due to practical reasons and some may be arranged with a little more organisation, so please, just tell us what you want. What would you like to see your hall used for? Any suggestions or requests will all be seriously considered and looked at by the committee and would enable the hall to be used to its maximum potential. Any interested parties or groups from outside Ewhurst parish are also welcome to get in touch as maybe your available facilities don’t quite fit the bill for you. The members of the Staplecross Luncheon Club will be gathering again at the Staplecross Village Hall, Northiam Road, on Wednesday May 21st at 12.30pm as they meet up once more in anticipation of another delicious two course lunch.This month, on the menu is home made pasties with vegetables and all the trimmings followed by locally resourced, home-grown rhubarb,enticingly turned into a mouth-watering crumble with a creamy custard. Yummy !. All this as always, is expertly prepared and cooked by our own super chef June, together with her team of very able helpers, who serve, collect, wash & put away ~ always with a smile on their faces. You too, can also enjoy the culinary delights on offer every month, as the membership ‘rules’ have not changed. These are simply that you have to be of or over a ‘certain age’ ~( which means over 50 years old,- by don’t tell everyone!) and by paying a measly £5:50 for the complete meal including tea/coffee afterwards. Also, by ‘signing up’, it will be assumed that you will be joining us every month, unless you notify them to the contrary. This just makes everything simple and avoids waste of both finances and food.-simple. This is a small popular, social group and new diners are always warmly welcomed. Continuing with their busy and full fixture list, the Staplecross Bowls Club have yet another hectic week ahead of them. Wednesday May 21st. at 2.30pm sees them play Battle in an away match followed by the first of 3 matches to be played out on their home ground in Northiam Road, Staplecross. The first of which is against Pett on Thursday May 22nd.. The second match will be on Saturday May 24th and will be against Brenchley & Matfield Team and bringing the week to a close, our team will play against

The next meeting of the Ewhurst, Staplecross & Bodiam Garden Society will take place on FRIDAY May 23rd. This will be a change from their usual meeting day of a Thursday, so make a note of it as there will be a superb speaker of note to entertain us, (and you won’t want to miss it) in the form of Mr. Ian Currie, who will surprise and delight us all with his talk entitled “Weather Lore”. The weather in all it’s different formats has always been a great topic of conversation with us British folk, whether, ( excuse the pun) we are complaining about the cold, the rain, the wind or the heat or at other times, the lack of one or all of them. I’m sure we will learn more about the ever-changing aspects of our weather, it’s idiosyncrasies and it’s fallacies throughout this fascinating subject as well as perhaps what to expect in the future. Come along to this meeting which will be held at the Staplecross Village Hall at 7.30pm. The talks are free to members but visitors, who will also be warmly welcomed, sadly must pay a miserly entrance fee of just £2:00 per person. It promises to be a very good evening and certainly beats listening to the weather on the T.V.or the radio. Still roaming about the countryside, the fellows of the footpaths, the members of the Rother Ramblers have another walk arranged for our enjoyment. This will be a 10.5 mile North of Battle, circular ‘stroll’ and will take place on Saturday May 24th. Those interested in joining in this meander around some really lovely countryside will meet up at 10.10am at Battle railway station. A picnic lunch is suggested and naturally your doggy pals can enjoy the walk with you. Please ring Lucy, the ‘Walk Leader, on this occasion on 01424~848332 for all further details. Please say “Hello” to your companions of the day, upon arrival, as not only does it make for more pleasant an outing, but who knows where these meetings and greetings will lead you. ~~ one step at a time.

Dates for your Diaries: The Herdman Association will be holding a fund-raising event at the new state-of-the-art Arthur Herdman sports pavilion in Ewhurst Green on Saturday June 7th. All & sundry are invited but anyone wanting to take part, rather than just come to look and buy, can hire a table & hopefully raise their own funds. Another advance notice is that of the Annual Rose Show of the Ewhurst, Staplecross & Bodiam Garden Society which will take place on Saturday June 21st in the Staplecross Village Hall. at 2pm. Along with the five rose classes there will also be other classes including floral arrangements, seasonal vegetables and five classes especially for the young people. Yummy home made cakes and tea will also be available. Entry forms, available from the village shop in Staplecross, are to be completed & returned before 5pm on Wednesday June 18th. Church services for the parish of Ewhurst commence on Sunday 18th May. Easter 4. with a 9.30am service at St. James the Great in Ewhurst, to include Holy Communion & that special service that celebrates the precious gift of life, a baptism. This service will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester who will then follow on with a 11.15am service, to include Holy Communion at the church of St. Giles, Bodiam.
