Sleeping drunk crashes car on A27 near Tangmere

Craig Collins, 38, of Newport Road, Aldershot, crashed his car on the westbound A27 carriageway at Norton, between the Fontwell and Tangmere roundabouts.

Police said he went on a drinking binge on June 6 in Kent before getting into his Volkwagen Golf to drive back to Aldershot, in Hampshire.

“Craig Collins drank at least five pints of lager and several Jägerbombs on a night out with friends in Kent until 3.30am on June 7” said a police spokesman today (July 6).

“He then got into his car and headed for his home in Aldershot but then fell asleep at the wheel and crashed off the A27 westbound at Norton.”

Collins was arrested at 6.20am and was found to have 64 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath – almost twice the legal limit.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on June 23.

He was banned from driving for 16 months, fined £250 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £25 victim surcharge.

A total of 24 people have so far been convicted of offences as part of the latest Sussex Police campaign.

In the same statement, police also named 26-year-old Kelly Male, from Chatsworth Road, Chichester, who admitted drink-driving and was banned from driving for 24 months.

“Kelly Male, 26, was arrested at 1.30am on June 7 after officers saw her driving close to parked cars and at speed in Florence Road, Chichester,” said police.

“She had 90 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of her breath – more than twice the legal limit.”

Male also appeared at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on June 23 and was fined £400 and order to pay £235 costs and a £40 surcharge, in addition to the driving ban.

Sussex Police said people could text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspected of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk.
