School turns friendship into an art form

Salehurst School pupils took part in a Multicultural Arts Week recently, when they considered friendship around the world.

During a busy week organised by Jackie Buckingham, the school’s business manager, the children worked towards an art exhibition, aided by Radiator Arts.

Sally Fortsch created a mural for the hall entitled ‘Tree of Values’ and helped the children to create screen-printed multi-cultural t-shirts.

Big Foot drama company held drama workshops which were supplemented by staff story-telling workshops and pupils learned some of the ancient techniques of Indian dance from Sushmita from ‘Kala the Arts’ in her workshops and performance.

Poems were the focus when the children met with Justin Coe who visited us on National Poetry Day and ‘Drum Crazy’ filled the school for the African drumming day with music, coinciding with a cake sale for Macmillan coffee morning on the final day of the week.

Pupils reinforced the world friendship theme by bringing in pocket-sized toys which will be taken to their sister school in Katitima, Malawi, this week.

The Salehurst School Association (PTA) helped raise funds to contribute towards the cost of the week and for providing refreshments during the art exhibition.
