Sands of Time: rated one of UK's top events

This weekend sees Bognor Regis welcome the summer with one of the UK's top-rated days out.

Sands of Time was placed at number six in the Sunday Times' recent best 50 tips for an enjoyable visit.

The compilers described Saturday and Sunday's occasion as bringing the best of seaside traditions alive.

A spokesman for the organisers at Bognor Regis Town Council said they were delighted with the national recognition.

"Sands of Time is a very relaxed event, with something for all the family to do.

"What better way to spend the day than enjoying the sunshine and joining in with the fun on the seafront?" he said.

This year's is the 11th of the annual occasions backed by the Bognor Regis Observer. It offers old favourites as well as new enjoyment.

Among the returning treats are donkey rides along the promenade, available on both days, and the sand sculpture competition.

This will take place on Sunday afternoon from 12.30pm on the beach around the bandstand. Adults and children will battle it out to see who has the best creative talents for a top prize of 200 for adults and 50 children.

The theme for the latest Sands of Time is Pirates and Smugglers. Captain Jack Sparrow, of Pirates of the Caribbean fame, or a close relative, is rumoured to be going along on Sunday.

A fancy dress parade and competition for lookalikes will take place at the Royal Norfolk Hotel at 1.30pm on Saturday.

Among the wide range of entertainment will be Morris Dancers and

Hi Bri's Dance Roadshow along with a steel band, Punch Judy, Andrew the Brilliant Balloon man and other music groups.

The hotel will also be the location for the traditional classic and vintage car collection on Sunday after a parade through the town.

The ever-popular bus rides around Bognor will being at noon on Sunday from Waterloo Square.

Other activities include displays and exhibitions in Waterloo Square, a charity fair on the seafront on Saturday and a craft fair at the Royal Norfolk Hotel on Sunday.
