Safety fears sparked after cyclist is hurt in East Preston

The crash took place at the junction of Worthing Road and Copse View, shortly before 7am, forcing police to close Worthing Road, east of Station Road.

The 24-year-old man was airlifted from Langmeads Field to Southampton General Hospital, by the air ambulance, where his condition was described as stable. The female driver of the car was unhurt.

Simon Locke, of Copse View, saw the helicopter land and said he and his two boys, aged seven and eight, were ‘shocked’ by the sight.

He has since voiced his concerns over road safety for cyclists across the area, claiming there had been a ‘serious lack of provision’ for riders and citing a ‘lack of investment’ by the Government as the primary cause for this.

“I do worry about my two boys cycling on the roads as they get older and without serious investment and planning the situation will only get worse,” he added.
