Runway bids arrive

CAMPAIGNERS have vowed to fight any expansion of Gatwick Airport once it is sold '“ and will have the backing of influential MPs and conservation groups.

Three groups who were in contention to buy the airport when bidding closed on Monday have all included an additional runway in their plans.

An existing legal agreement means a second runway cannot be built at the West Sussex airport before 2019, but this has not deterred three groups which were known to have submitted bids.

Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign Group said on Monday: "There is no physical space for a new runway between the towns of Horley and Crawley.

"If the pressure of public opposition defeats the Stansted and Heathrow proposals, there are good reasons to suppose that the opposition would be even more fierce from the articulate and environmentally conscious population around Gatwick."
