Rose Green Infant School could shape Ofsted policy

She told the school her visit provided valuable information which would significantly contribute to Ofsted's national evaluation and reporting.

She rated the quality of the school's maths curriculum as outstanding. Its pupils' achievement in maths was good and standards were above average, she stated.

The quality of teaching ranged from outstanding to good with outstanding features. Learning about the subject was also good, along with pupils' inclusion in the subject.

She highlighted the creative use of stories and cross-curricular activities which played a part in reaching the high standard under the school's maths co-ordinator Karen Rodger.

Her report was published last weekfollowing her visit in mid-March.

Headteacher Susanne Carter said the inspection was a surprise and arranged at a week's notice.

She stated: "We are delighted Ofsted recognised the excellent quality of maths education we offer our children and confirmed how much the children enjoy their learning at the school."

Ms Skinner's visit came two years after the infant school's last full Ofsted inspection.

The education watchdog launched the subject surveys to find out how schools around the country are approaching the quality of teaching and learning in one area.

Ms Skinner interviewed staff and pupils, observed parts of nine lessons, analysed pupils' work and looked at relevant documents.

The subject surveys come between full Ofsted inspections, which are now likely to occur every six years.
