Rodmell and Southease

RODMELL SCHOOL: It was with shock that a lot of people read the headline in the Sussex Express (March 18) about Rodmell and the Pells Schools facing being shut down due to lack of pupils. The council says they struggle to meet pupil admission numbers. Rodmell School faced this problem quite a few years ago but managed to pull through and a great deal of work was done to keep it p to scratch. It's like the Tardis from Dr Who, much bigger inside than it looks from the outside. It is also much loved by the village, who will fight to keep it. Many villagers and their parents before them attended the school. I suppose another problem could be the fact that younger people find it difficult to buy a house in the village within their price range. This is a very expensive village to live in, with many houses being over the million range and like lots of villages, people now move from London where they sell their houses for millions and move into large country properties at a fraction of the price they paid in London. They then tend to send their children to more upmarket or private schools. I hear Rodmell School pupils now mainly come from Peacehaven and Newhaven. Please sign the petition.

TALK: Ian Everest did one of his wonderful talks and film shows in our village hall on Saturday March 20. The hall was full and as usual it was a great event. Many thanks to those who organised it and provided food and drink.

SPRING SHOW: The village is starting to look very beautiful at the moment with its banks of daffodils and its magnolias coming out. Don’t forget Rodmell Spring Show takes place tomorrow, Saturday, 2.30pm to 4.30pm in the village hall. Admission £1. Raffle and homemade teas.

THE GARDEN: With the weather being so good of late, I’ve managed to get out into the garden and orchard and it has been lovely. I just love this time of year.

LITTER: We should all be very thankful that we live in a beautiful area and try to keep it litter free. The amount of rubbish along the A23, A27 and A26 is horrendous and goodness knows what visitors to this country think of us. It does not project a good image. I used to see litter pickers out and about on a regular basis but I haven’t noticed them recently. Is it cut-backs again?

NASTY SHOCK: I had a nasty shock recently when a cyclist nearly ended up under my car having come out of Lewes Library turning, at full speed, going in the wrong direction. As I’ve said before, we are all getting fed up with cyclists going the wrong way in the Friars Walk, Landsdown Place area, it’s so dangerous.

THE RACES: I was so pleased that Victoria Pendleton managed to get round on the Foxhunter Chase at Cheltenham without coming to harm. As a rider of 13 months on from riding a race horse. It was surely a great achievement to be able to ride in such a great race as this at all, in such a short period. I have ridden ex-race horses in the past and they are like coiled springs. I was not what I would call a good rider and came off many times.

RELIGION: Is it any wonder that young people (and some old) are turning away from religion these days. With fossils being found that go back in time further and further, long before the Bible was written, the young are so involve in science and technology that religion must seem like a fairy story to them. I’ve heard some say, how can we believe in it all when the world is going mad and becoming more evil and, we’ve been waiting endless years for the saviour who is supposed to be coming to save us. Patience it seems, like faith, is running out.
