Resident wins award for dedication to Special Olympics

FRIDAY 13TH proved to be a lucky day for Bexhillian Ian Stewart as he received two awards at the Sussex Sports Awards.

The award ceremony, which was held at Brighton's Hilton Metropole, was hosted by 400m Gold Medallist, Derek Redmond who said that all the Sussex Sports Award finalists had, "shown huge passion and commitment to their game."

Ian was recognised for his work and dedication to Special Olympic, winning the ward for 'Volunteer of the Year', along with being runner-up in the 'Unsung Hero' category.

Ian, who is Chairman of Hastings & Rother Special Olympics group, has been involved with Special Olympics for the past twenty five years. His daughter, Kirsty is well-known in the area for her outstanding swimming achievements in Special Olympics.

Ian said he was initially "absolutely stunned" to be a finalist adding:

"I'm passionate about disability sports. I am just so committed and enjoy working with these athletes; it gives them so much self-esteem and I am humble about their achievements. It's fantastically rewarding."

He added: "I am ecstatic to have been voted Volunteer of the Year. I'm very proud to have been recognised."
