Renewed bid for Ford site

West Sussex will suffer from severe environmental damage unless a vital recycling facility is built soon according to waste management company Viridor.

The company has submitted a revised application for a Materials Recycling Facility at Ford Airfield after plans were rejected in February because of concerns over traffic.

West Sussex County Council is eager for the plan to be accepted to help meet European, national and local recycling targets when the county's only existing MRF at Sompting closes in 2006.

The proposals were unanimously refused because councillors on the planning committee felt the site's heavy goods vehicles would add to the area's congestion problems.

Viridor is currently appealing against the decision on and is adamant that Ford is the right location for the site.
