RECYCLING REACHES 29 PER CENT IN COUNTY

East Sussex residents are well on course to meet Government targets for recycling, new figures show.

Some 29 per cent of all household waste was diverted from landfill sites in the nine months up to December 31.

The figure puts East Sussex County Council in good shape to exceed a target set by Defra of 28 per cent for the 12 months up to April.

It represents a total of 57, 051 tonnes of waste - equivalent to the weight of 6,000 double-decker buses.

Cllr Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: 'The county's performance is improving every year and I think people are really beginning to understand the environmental benefits of diverting waste from landfill sites.'

The final figures for the last three years were 22 per cent in 2003/4, 24 per cent the following year, and 27 per cent last year.
