Police blitz is urged on illegally-parked vehicles in Bognor

A police blitz has been requested on illegally-parked vehicles on a Bognor Regis estate.

Councillors said parking tickets should be regularly handed out around the Glenwood estate to stop students at the nearby University of Chichester campus leaving their vehicles on the roads.

Recent action by the police saw one vehicle towed away because it was wrongly parked.

Cllr Francis Oppler called for a repeat action. "I would request the police go along there as frequently as possible and blitz the ones which are illegally parked," he said.

"That's the only way we are going to get the message through to the students they have a free car park 100 yards down the road, which is safe, and from where they can walk to the university."

He was referring to a special section in the London lorry and car park which was created in late January for students' parking.

The University paid Arun District Council 1,000 towards the 5,700 cost of the scheme and received 400 parking permits to hand out free to students. Take-up of the reserved parking area has been slow. By late February, 69 permits had been issued.

Up until last week, there were only one or two vehicles in the car park most days. But the number has increased to up to eight at midday.

Sussex Police Inspector Sharon Parker said officers would be asked to patrol the estate when possible. But the duty would have to be fitted around their other priorities.
