PICTURES: Army of scarecrows comes to town to commemorate 1066

The Battle Scarecrow Festival is well underway, with various Normans, Saxons and monks hidden around the town centre.

This year’s festival, which will be running until Saturday July 23, has the theme ‘1066 And All That’ to mark the forthcoming 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

A number of local businesses, youth groups, charities and community groups have taken part in this year’s event, including Amicus Horizon, Abbey Pet Foods, 1st Battle Rainbows, Battle Mowers, Battle Floral and Horticultural Society, Saxonwood WI, the Battle Museum of Local History, Battle for Tennis, Battle Deli, Nationwide, Shire County Clothing, Bull Inn, Battel Bonfire Boyes, Battle Pre-School, Autism Sussex, 3rd Battle Brownies, 1st Sedlescombe Guides, Out of the Blue and more.

In total, 43 entrants are fighting it out in a bid to win one of four awards up for grabs - Best Community Entry, Best Business Entry, Best Entry Using Recycled Materials and the much-coveted People’s Favourite.

Voting forms can be picked up from Alan Hunting Associates (AHA Copy Shop & Stationers) in Mount Street.

Prizes for the best entries will be announced and awarded at the Battle In Bloom Awards on Thursday July 28 at The Almonry.

The Battle Scarecrow Festival is supporting the Battle Museum of Local History and Guide Dogs for the Blind. The event is sponsored by Littlewood Fencing.
