Colin and Lynn Offord, who own Lynns Travel, helped organise fundraising events at The Star Inn in Sluice Lane, Normans Bay, on October 17 and 24 – with around 180 people attending over the two days.

Those at the event were treated to a two-course meal with half of the money going to the city of Lebedyn – which is around two-hours from the Russian border.

Following the two events, which raised more than £2,000, Mrs Offord said: “It means something to us. We know the people. It brings it home to us. We get regular messages about what is happening in the village. We wanted to do what we could.

“We have been there, we know the people, we know what is going on.”

Mrs Offord explained that she has been to the city twice, while her husband has visited on three occasions before the war broke out.. The couple said they went to the city before the war to offer their help and have visited local schools, orphanages and hospitals in the past.

The couple added: “We would like to thank the Star Inn for their support and the Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway, Community Church (St Anthony’s), Janet's Flowers and Lynns Travel customers.”
